In 1902, William Gilbert sold land to the Arizona Eastern
Railway to build a line between Phoenix and Florence, AZ. By 1920,
Gilbert was incorporated. Now the town of Gilbert,
AZ is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. It has an area of
72.6 square miles, and is located just southeast of Phoenix. Originally an agricultural
community, the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World,” it has developed into a
successful suburban community. It has been named as the second safest city and
the twenty-second best place to live in the U.S. By 2018, the population is
nearly 255,000. The famous water tower still rises above downtown Gilbert,
surrounded by a busy shopping and entertainment district.
Gilbert is a youthful community, with a median age of 33
years and with 71% under age 45. The school system has an average graduation
rate of 90%.Younger households have a
median income of $64,000, while slightly older households have a median income
of $105,000.
